The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme
As part of its suite of policies designed to mitigate climate change, the UK Government is to introduce a new mandatory emissions trading scheme. The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme, formerly known as the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) aims to deliver energy and carbon savings from large public and private sector organisations across the UK. It is enabled via the Climate Change Act which became law in November 2008 and the scheme is expected to commence in April 2010.
Based on the criteria set out in the CRC, Biffa is obligated to register and participate in the scheme. A number of measures will be put in place as part of our strategy going forward to ensure compliance with the scheme, including:
- Defining key management responsibility
- Implementing robust data collection systems to record energy consumption (excluding transport based data)
- Review of electricity credit entitlements based on renewable energy generated and exported
- Installation of SMART/ AMR meters
- Review information and implement further efficiency measures to continue to reduce emissions
- Consider the Carbon Trust Standard
