Proposals
Our proposal is to develop an energy recovery facility that will produce 21 megawatts of electricity from Leicestershire's waste.
In addition to being able to deal with the 180,000 tonnes per annum of residual household waste required under the Leicestershire County Council's waste disposal contract, Biffa's new energy recovery plant will have extra capacity to allow it to handle an additional 120,000 tonnes per annum of residual commercial and industrial waste generated by businesses in the East Midlands.
Residual waste is what remains once waste has been treated to recover recyclables, either by homeowners or businesses or through materials recovery at dedicated recycling sites.
Our plans have been developed to meet the requirements of the Leicestershire County Council household residual waste treatment contract requirements for which we have been shortlisted. If we are not successful in being awarded this contract our intention is to develop an energy recovery plant to deal with just the region's industrial and commercial waste.
The proposed 300,000 tonnes per annum plant will comply with the strict environmental requirements of the European Waste Incineration Directive. Its robust legal requirements will be enforced by the Environment Agency that will also regulate the complete operation. It will utilise proven, best available technology to create energy in the form of electricity.
The energy recovery facility will be provided by the international thermal technology company Von Roll Inova who have built nearly 400 similar plants across the world. The technology used will reduce the volume of waste that would otherwise go to landfill by up to 95%. It will also make a significant contribution towards this country's energy needs.
